A visit to ferry "Volcán del Teide" in Astilleros de Santander (Santander Shipyards)
On 28 December a group of friends were invited by Jaime Oliver to visit in Santander Shipyards, the ferry ship "Volcan del Teide", which at those days was being painted and finishing works before her delivery to her owner "Naviera Armas", so ending the construction of the vessel built in Vigo's (Spain) H.J. Barreras.
Jaime invited the group of friends, as fond of ships and considering that we would have an added interest because his company, Oliver Design, has designed all the accommodations and the outside profile of the vessel, and has fitted much of the elements and equipments that conform the public spaces and cabins of the ship.
The members of this group previously met at a hostel near the shipyard, where Conchita, Jaime's wife, greeted us with a freshly brewed coffee and Jaime gave us a graphic information of the ship to be visited and a memory of the recent activities of his company , all perfectly collected in a pen-drive.
Then we headed to the shipyard where we were greeted by director Juan Luis Sánchez Echevarría, who, after giving us his welcome, accompanied us up to the entrance to the ship, sited in No.1 dry dock. Once inside, Jaime was showing and explaining in detail, aided by drawings and sketches made by himself, the main areas of the vessel's accommodations, and we could appreciate her modern, functional design, with lots of innovative features, all focused toward the comfort and safety of passengers, all within a sober and lightly style and with lots of details hard to be sen in this type of vessels.
Some points that caught my attention were these:
The longitudinal 3D profile of the ship, with glass areas, which break the typical monotony of ship-side, as usually in this type of vessels.
Public spaces arranged shared on two decks, which greatly enhances the visual spatial outlook.
Glass domes arranged in some places to provide natural light to interior spaces.
Some suites arranged in two levels with internal stair.
Windows in cabins and saloons of a big height to increase their visual field.
Very large boarding hall and connected to shopping areas.
Swimming pool with spacious adjacent sunbathing areas.

Once completed the visit we went down up to the restaurant "La Marina" in Pedrena, where we enjoyed a good lunch, with a predominance of seafood in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and with magnificent views over the nearby marina, until the shadows of the evening told us it was time to go home.
Thank you very much to our hosts Jaime and Conchita for their invitation to see a new and novel ferry, interesting and attractive and also to allow us to enjoy a day with these friends, Teresa and Guillermo Avanzini, Nuria and Javier Ferrer, Alfonso Osorio, Carlos Lejarreta, Margarita and Juan José Azpiroz.
Here you can see all photos I got in this visit.
